A sight-restoring procedure tailored to your cornea.

Miami Eye Institute, under the care of Dr. Inna Ozerov, provides modern corneal transplant surgery for patients whose vision has been compromised by corneal disease, scarring, swelling, or distortion.

Modern corneal transplantation is no longer a one-size-fits-all procedure. Depending on the specific condition, only the diseased layer of the cornea may need to be replaced — a major advance from older full-thickness techniques. Options include DSEK and DMEK for endothelial diseases like Fuchs’ dystrophy, DALK for stromal diseases, and traditional penetrating keratoplasty (PK) for severe corneal damage.

These techniques offer faster recovery, lower rejection risk, and excellent visual outcomes compared with traditional methods. Miami Eye Institute proudly serves patients in Hollywood, Florida, Miami, Florida, Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Hallandale Beach, Aventura, Davie, Miramar, Cooper City, Weston, Plantation, and surrounding South Florida communities.

OUR APPROACH

How modern corneal transplantation works.

Choosing the right transplant technique is essential. Our process is built around precise diagnosis, modern surgical planning, and attentive follow-up.

  1. Comprehensive Corneal Evaluation

We perform detailed corneal imaging, topography, and endothelial cell analysis to identify exactly which layer of the cornea is diseased and which technique is best.

  2. Surgical Planning & Donor Tissue

We coordinate with eye banks to obtain high-quality donor tissue prepared specifically for your procedure (DSEK, DMEK, DALK, or PK).

  3. Modern Corneal Transplant Surgery

Surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure. Whenever possible, only the diseased layer of cornea is replaced — preserving the rest of your eye’s natural tissue.

  4. Recovery & Long-Term Monitoring

Healing time varies by technique. We monitor closely with regular exams to detect early signs of rejection, manage prescription drops, and protect your transplant for the long term.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions about corneal transplant surgery.

A corneal transplant is a big decision. These answers explain the options, the surgery itself, and what recovery involves.

What is a corneal transplant?
A corneal transplant replaces all or part of a diseased cornea with healthy donor tissue. Modern techniques often replace only the specific diseased layer of the cornea, which improves outcomes and reduces complications compared with traditional full-thickness procedures.
Who needs a corneal transplant?
Common reasons include Fuchs’ corneal dystrophy, advanced keratoconus, corneal scarring from infection or injury, complications of prior surgery, and other conditions that distort or cloud the cornea beyond what lenses can correct.
What are the different types?
Main options include DSEK and DMEK (replace only the inner endothelial layer — ideal for Fuchs’ dystrophy and similar conditions), DALK (replaces front and middle layers — used for keratoconus and stromal disease), and PK (full-thickness transplant for severe damage).
How long does recovery take?
Recovery varies by technique. DMEK patients often see substantial improvement within weeks. DSEK and DALK take a few months. Traditional PK can take 12 months or longer to reach final vision. Dr. Ozerov will explain the timeline specific to your procedure.
What is the success rate?
Modern corneal transplant techniques have excellent success rates — generally above 90% for properly selected patients. Outcomes are best when surgery is performed before significant secondary complications develop.
Can the body reject a corneal transplant?
Rejection is possible but uncommon, especially with modern partial-thickness techniques. Patients use prescription steroid drops long term and follow up regularly so any early signs of rejection can be addressed immediately.
Will I need glasses or contacts after?
Many patients still need glasses or contacts after a corneal transplant to achieve the sharpest vision. Some patients also benefit from later refractive correction. Patients across Hollywood, Florida, Miami, Florida, and surrounding communities trust Dr. Ozerov for comprehensive corneal transplant care.
