An urgent approach to protecting your sight.

Miami Eye Institute, under Dr. Inna Ozerov, provides urgent evaluation for symptoms suggestive of a retinal tear or detached retina — a serious condition that can cause permanent vision loss if not treated quickly.

A retinal detachment occurs when the retina (the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye) pulls away from its underlying support tissue. Common warning signs include sudden flashes of light, a shower of new floaters, a shadow or curtain over part of your vision, and rapidly worsening eyesight.

When these symptoms appear, time matters. Our team performs immediate dilated retinal exams and advanced imaging, then coordinates rapid treatment — including laser, cryotherapy, or surgical repair — to give you the best chance at preserving vision. Miami Eye Institute proudly serves patients in Hollywood, Florida, Miami, Florida, Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Hallandale Beach, Aventura, Davie, Miramar, Cooper City, Weston, Plantation, and surrounding South Florida communities.

OUR APPROACH

How we evaluate and manage retinal emergencies.

Every suspected retinal detachment is treated as urgent. Our process focuses on rapid, accurate diagnosis and immediate coordination of treatment.

  1. Urgent Symptom Assessment

We rapidly review your symptoms — flashes, floaters, shadows, or sudden vision changes — and triage to ensure you’re seen quickly.

  2. Dilated Retinal Examination

A complete dilated exam allows direct visualization of the retina to identify tears, holes, or detachment.

  3. Advanced Imaging

We use optical coherence tomography (OCT) and other imaging tools to precisely map the retina and detect even subtle changes.

  4. Coordinated Treatment Plan

Depending on the findings, treatment may include in-office laser, cryotherapy, or rapid surgical referral. We stay involved throughout your recovery.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions about retinal detachment.

A detached retina is an emergency, but most can be repaired successfully with prompt care. Here are answers to the questions patients ask most.

What is a detached retina?
A detached retina occurs when the retina — the thin layer of light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye — pulls away from the underlying tissue that supplies it with oxygen and nutrients. Without rapid treatment, the affected area can lose function permanently.
What causes retinal detachment?
Common causes include age-related changes in the vitreous gel inside the eye, severe nearsightedness, eye trauma, prior eye surgery, family history, and certain conditions such as diabetic retinopathy. Retinal tears often precede full detachment.
What are the warning signs?
Warning signs include a sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light (especially in peripheral vision), a dark shadow or curtain spreading across your visual field, and a sudden decrease in vision. Any of these symptoms require urgent evaluation.
Is retinal detachment painful?
No — retinal detachment is typically painless, which is why patients sometimes delay care. The lack of pain does not mean the condition is mild. Visual symptoms alone are enough to warrant immediate attention.
How is retinal detachment treated?
Treatment options include laser photocoagulation or cryotherapy for small tears, and surgical procedures such as pneumatic retinopexy, scleral buckle, or vitrectomy for established detachments. Dr. Ozerov will evaluate your eye and coordinate the appropriate treatment quickly.
Can vision be restored after a detached retina?
Many patients regain significant vision when treatment is provided early. The amount of recovery depends on the size and location of the detachment and how quickly the macula (central vision area) is involved. Time is the single most important factor.
When should I seek care?
Seek care immediately if you experience new flashes, floaters, shadows, or sudden vision loss. Patients across Hollywood, Florida, Miami, Florida, Fort Lauderdale, Aventura, and other South Florida communities can call Dr. Ozerov’s office for urgent evaluation.
