A targeted approach to painful eyelid bumps.

Miami Eye Institute, led by Dr. Inna Ozerov, provides effective treatment for styes and chalazia — common eyelid lumps that can be tender, swollen, and frustrating to manage.

A stye (hordeolum) is a small, painful, red bump caused by a bacterial infection of an eyelash follicle or eyelid gland. A chalazion is a firm, usually painless lump that forms when a meibomian (oil) gland becomes blocked. Although they look similar, they require different treatment approaches.

Our team can quickly distinguish between the two, treat the underlying cause, and — when needed — perform in-office procedures to resolve stubborn lumps that don’t respond to conservative care. Miami Eye Institute proudly serves patients in Hollywood, Florida, Miami, Florida, Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Hallandale Beach, Aventura, Davie, Miramar, Cooper City, Weston, Plantation, and surrounding South Florida communities.

Styes and chalazia affect millions of Americans each year.

OUR APPROACH

How we evaluate and treat eyelid lumps.

Most styes and chalazia respond well to early, targeted care. Our process focuses on accurate diagnosis, quick relief, and prevention of recurrence.

  1. Detailed Eyelid Examination

We carefully evaluate the lump’s location, tenderness, and size to determine whether it is a stye, a chalazion, or another condition.

  2. Underlying Cause Review

Because chronic blepharitis, dry eye, and oil gland dysfunction can drive recurring styes and chalazia, we assess these conditions during the same visit.

  3. Personalized Treatment Plan

Treatment may include warm compresses, lid hygiene, topical antibiotics, oral medications, and steroid injections or minor in-office incision-and-drainage procedures.

  4. Prevention & Follow-Up

We treat any underlying lid disease to reduce the chance of future styes and chalazia and follow up to confirm full resolution.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions about styes and chalazia.

Styes and chalazia are common and usually easy to treat. Here are answers to the questions patients ask us most.

What is a stye?
A stye, medically called a hordeolum, is a red, tender, pimple-like bump on or near the edge of the eyelid. It is caused by a bacterial infection — usually staphylococcus — in an eyelash follicle or eyelid gland.
What is a chalazion?
A chalazion is a firm, slow-growing lump in the eyelid caused by a blocked meibomian oil gland. Unlike a stye, it is usually not painful and tends to develop more gradually.
What’s the difference between a stye and a chalazion?
Styes are typically painful, red, and located near the lash line. Chalazia are firmer, deeper, and usually painless. Sometimes a stye that does not fully resolve becomes a chalazion. Treatment differs, so proper diagnosis matters.
Are they contagious?
Styes are caused by bacteria already living on the skin and are not considered highly contagious, but the bacteria can spread through close contact, shared towels, or eye makeup. Chalazia are not contagious.
How are styes and chalazia treated?
First-line treatment usually includes warm compresses several times a day, gentle lid hygiene, and sometimes topical antibiotic ointments. Persistent chalazia may need a steroid injection or a minor in-office incision-and-drainage procedure.
Can they come back?
Yes — especially in patients with blepharitis, dry eye, or meibomian gland dysfunction. Treating these underlying conditions is the key to preventing recurrence.
When should I see a doctor?
See an eye doctor if a lump grows quickly, doesn’t improve after a week, affects your vision, becomes very painful, or keeps coming back. Patients across Hollywood, Florida, Miami, Florida, and surrounding South Florida cities trust Dr. Ozerov for effective stye and chalazion care.
