A proactive approach to diabetes-related eye disease.

Miami Eye Institute, under the care of Dr. Inna Ozerov, provides comprehensive diagnosis and management of diabetic retinopathy — a leading cause of preventable vision loss in adults.

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when high blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels in the retina. Over time, these vessels may leak, swell, or close off entirely, leading to blurred vision, dark spots, and in advanced cases, severe vision loss.

Many people with early diabetic retinopathy have no symptoms at all, which is why routine dilated eye exams are essential for anyone with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Our team uses advanced imaging to detect the disease early and treat it before it threatens your sight. Miami Eye Institute proudly serves patients in Hollywood, Florida, Miami, Florida, Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Hallandale Beach, Aventura, Davie, Miramar, Cooper City, Weston, Plantation, and surrounding South Florida communities.

OUR APPROACH

How we detect and treat diabetic retinopathy.

Our process is built around early detection, careful monitoring, and timely treatment — the three pillars of preserving sight in diabetic patients.

  1. Comprehensive Diabetic Eye Exam

We perform a full dilated retinal exam to look for microaneurysms, hemorrhages, swelling, and abnormal blood vessel growth.

  2. Advanced Imaging

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus photography help us detect retinal swelling and vessel changes that aren’t visible on a standard exam.

  3. Targeted Treatment

Depending on severity, we may recommend tighter diabetes control, intravitreal injections, laser therapy, or coordinated retinal surgery referrals.

  4. Long-Term Monitoring

Diabetic retinopathy requires ongoing follow-up. We work closely with your primary care doctor or endocrinologist to protect your vision over the long term.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions about diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetes affects the eyes in ways many patients don’t expect. These answers explain the risks, the warning signs, and how treatment works.

What is diabetic retinopathy?
Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the blood vessels in the retina caused by high blood sugar over time. It can range from mild (small vessel leaks) to severe (abnormal vessel growth, bleeding, and retinal detachment) and is a leading cause of vision loss in adults with diabetes.
What causes diabetic retinopathy?
Long-standing or poorly controlled diabetes is the primary cause. Risk factors include high blood sugar, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pregnancy in diabetic patients, smoking, and duration of diabetes. The longer someone has diabetes, the higher the risk.
What are the symptoms?
Early diabetic retinopathy often has no symptoms. As it progresses, symptoms can include blurred vision, dark spots or floaters, difficulty seeing at night, faded colors, and in advanced cases, significant vision loss. Routine exams catch the disease before symptoms appear.
How is it diagnosed?
Diagnosis requires a dilated retinal exam combined with imaging studies such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus photography. These tools allow Dr. Ozerov to see and document subtle changes in the retina.
How is diabetic retinopathy treated?
Mild cases are managed with close monitoring and tight blood sugar control. More advanced disease may require anti-VEGF injections (such as Avastin, Eylea, or Lucentis), laser treatment, or vitreoretinal surgery. The right treatment depends on the stage.
Can diabetic retinopathy be prevented?
Yes — to a significant degree. Strict control of blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol, combined with annual dilated eye exams, dramatically lowers the risk of vision-threatening disease.
How often should I get my eyes checked?
All diabetic patients should have a dilated eye exam at least once a year, and more often if disease is detected. Patients across Hollywood, Florida, Miami, Florida, Pembroke Pines, Davie, and other surrounding communities trust Dr. Ozerov for thorough diabetic eye care.
